Transmethylation and the cycle behind is essential to mark molecules like RNA/DNA, proteins, peptides etc. for degradation or recycling.

To cover all the marking reactions, methyl groups are needed. To keep the proper constant flux of methyl groups our body developed the transmethylation system in which several enzymes are involved (Figure 1).

Steps of the cycle

  1. SAM methyl group is transferred to the molecule which needs to be marked/labelledWhile SAM looses the methyl-group SAH (S-adenosine-homocystein) is produced
