The amino acid metabolism is a bit different compared to glucose or even lipid metabolism. It is important to see that based on the type of the amino acids the metabolism can relate to the lipid intermediates or to the glucose metabolism, by which we distinguish between ketogenic or glucogenic amino acids
- If an amino acid is involved in glycolysis and the carbohydrate metabolism it is called “glucogenic“
- If an amino acid is involved in lipid metabolism, it is called “ketogenic“
Based on their type we also distinguished between purely ketogenic or glycogenic or semi-ketogenic, semi-glycogenic.
