In most of the nonoxidative decarboxylation reactions, PLP serves as the cofactor for the enzymes. These reactions take place in the cell division initiation or partially in the urea cycle side reactions.

Only one enzyme uses pyruvyl cofactor for decarboxylation, the S-adenosyl-methionine decarboxylase (Figure 1).
