The majority of the amino acid (AA) molecules in the human body are derived from proteins and are used for protein synthesis. They are called proteinogenic amino acids. There are 21 are used as building blocks of proteins (Figure 1).

Apart from the proteinogenic amino acids, there is another group — the non-proteinogenic amino acid group, with one amino group, one carboxyl group, and a side chain.
