An acute respiratory failure is associated with inflammation.
Clinical definition1
The Berlin definition requires all four criteria to be present for the diagnosis of ARDS:
- Time -- Within a week of a known clinical insult
- Chest imaging -- Bilateral opacities consistent with pulmonary edema
- Origin of edema -- Not fully explained by cardiac failure or fluid overload
- Oxygenation -- Impaired
