A group of infectious diseases in which the causative agent is an abnormal form of a normal cellular protein.

  • Caused by a prion protein (PrP)
    • Changes from alpha-helical to beta-sheets -- resistant to protease PrPres
    • Can "infect" normal PrP to turn into PrPres
      • Self-amplification
    • Causes cellular injury
  • Caused spontaneously (sporadic),
