The perineum is a diamond-shaped region containing the genitalia and anus.

Female perineum

Borders

  • Superior — Pelvic floor (inferior surface of the pelvic diaphragm)
  • Lateral — Ischiopubic rami and ischial tuberosities
  • Anterior — Pubic symphysis
  • Posterior — Sacrum, coccyx and sacrotuberous ligament

Triangles

The perineum can be divided into two triangles by the superficial transverse perineal muscle which is located between the two ischial tuberosities — the urogenital triangle and the anal triangle.
