The hypoglossal nerve (“under the tongue”) controls the muscles of the tongue (all except for palatoglossus).
The hypoglossal nerve supplies motor innervation to the muscles of the tongue:
- Extrinsic (all except for palatoglossus, which is innervated by CN X)
- Genioglossus
- Hyoglossus
- Styloglossus
- Intrinsic
- Vertical
- Transverse
- Superior
