The hypoglossal nerve (“under the tongue”) controls the muscles of the tongue (all except for palatoglossus).

The hypoglossal nerve supplies motor innervation to the muscles of the tongue:

  • Extrinsic (all except for palatoglossus, which is innervated by CN X)
    1. Genioglossus
    2. Hyoglossus
    3. Styloglossus
  • Intrinsic
    • Vertical
    • Transverse
    • Superior
