The extraocular muscles or extrinsic muscles of the eyeball are responsible for the movements of the eyeball and the superior eyelids. 

Muscles

The seven extraocular muscles are the following:

  • The elevator upper eyelid (of the Latin levator palpebrae superioris)
  • The superior rectus
  • The inferior rectus
  • The medial rectus
  • The lateral rectus
  • The superior oblique 
  • The inferior oblique

This group of muscles works together to allow the eyeball and the eyelids to move, the movements are coordinated, so the muscles cannot perform in isolation.
