Regions

The regions of the hand include the palm and the dorsum of the hand.

Bones

The bony hand consists of 27 bones that can be divided into three groups: carpal, metacarpal, and phalangeal bones.

Only the 8 carpal bones have a unique name, and they are further divided into a proximal and distal row, with 4 bones in each row:

  • The proximal row consists of the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum and pisiform bones (from lateral to medial).
  • The distal row consists of the trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate bones.
