The posterior compartment of the thigh is conveniently known as the hamstring muscles, and it consists of three long muscles:

  1. Bicep femoris
  2. Semitendinosus 
  3. Semimembranosus

Description

The muscles of the posterior compartment share a common origin as the ischial tuberosity and act on both the hip and the knee joints, allowing extension and flexion at each joint, respectively. All muscles in the posterior compartment are innervated by the sciatic nerve.
