Steps of cAMP production (Figure 1)

1. G-proteins can be found in the heterotrimeric form, consisting of three subunits (alpha, beta, gamma)
2. With GDP bound to the alpha subunit, the G protein is inactive
3. In order to become active, a ligand must bind to the 7-TM receptor and cause a conformational change
4. This conformational change causes the alpha subunit to dissociate
