G6PD deficiency is an X-linked recessive condition with acute attacks of hemolytic anemia due to hemolysis triggered by oxidative stress.

Characteristics

  • Normal blood count between the acute attacks.
  • The oxidative stress is typically caused by an infection, many groups of drugs (including certain antibiotics and antimalarials), and fava beans.
  • The acute attack occurs within several hours up to 2 days after the exposure.
