It is a relatively mild form of CTD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is different from mixed connective tissue disease, in which the symptoms and laboratory findings of the patient are sufficient for the diagnosis of more than one type of connective tissue disease.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Some patients develop a definitive CTD<\/li><li>Some patients experience remission<\/li><li>Most patients remain with UCTD<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Pathogenesis<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pathogenesis of UCTD, similar to other CTD, is poorly understood. Both genetic and environmental factors come into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Clinical presentation<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patient may present with the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Joint pain and arthritis<\/li><li>Rashes, especially the face<\/li><li>Alopecia<\/li><li>Raynau&#8217;s syndrome<\/li><li>Xeropthalmia and xerostomia<\/li><li>Mucosal ulcers<\/li><li>Pleuritis and pericarditis<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Diagnosis<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Clinical presentation; the symptoms do not meet the criteria for a specific, defined CTD<\/li><li>Serology; presence of ANAs<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DDx can be any of the CTD, or fibromyalgia if the laboratory findings are negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other findings may also be seen on blood tests:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Elevated ESR<\/li><li>APL antibodies<\/li><li>Reduced C4 levels<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Treatment<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s no well-established protocol for UCTD, and the treartment is often symptomatic, and focuses on immune suppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Analgesics<\/li><li>Topical steroids<\/li><li>DMARDs<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pathogenesis<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical presentation<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnosis<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UCTD is a description of a condition that falls under the umbrella of connective tissue diseases but doesn&#8217;t meet the sufficient criteria to be classified into a specific, well-defined CTD entity (SLE, scleroderma, RA).
