The heart is a fist-sized and shaped organ that is essentially the \u201cengine\u201d of the circulatory system. It\u00a0functions as a pump that sustains pressures sufficient to maintain circulation within the vessels of the body.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compartments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

The\u00a0septum of the heart<\/strong>\u00a0divides the heart into right and left halves. Each of the halves is separated by a valve, into a total of four compartments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Right atrium<\/strong>. Receives deoxygenated blood from the body, and propels it to the right ventricle.<\/li>
  2. Right ventricle<\/strong>. Receives blood from the right atrium, propelling it during into the pulmonary artery towards the lungs.<\/li>
  3. Left atrium<\/strong>. Recieves oxygenated blood from the lungs, and propels it in the left ventricle.<\/li>
  4. Left ventricle<\/strong>: Recieves blood from the left atrium, propelling it into the aorta towards the body.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<\/span>\n
