{"id":6772,"date":"2021-09-14T19:45:04","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T17:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/pathology\/cardiac-pathology\/endocarditis-and-prosthetic-valve-related-disorders\/"},"modified":"2021-09-14T19:47:36","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T17:47:36","slug":"endocarditis-and-prosthetic-valve-related-disorders","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/pathology\/cardiac-pathology\/endocarditis-and-prosthetic-valve-related-disorders\/","title":{"rendered":"Endocarditis and prosthetic valve-related disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Infective<\/li><li>Non-infective<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Infective endocarditis<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bacterial infection of the endocardium lining the valves (mostly) or chambers, leading to the formation of bacterial vegetations lined with thrombi and debris, causing the destruction of the tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The aortic and mitral valves are most commonly affected<ul><li>The tricuspid is frequent in IV drug abuse<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Classified to <strong>acute<\/strong> and <strong>subacute<\/strong><ul><li>Acute &#8212; Highly destructive, due to highly virulent organisms<\/li><li>Subacute &#8212; Low-virulence organisms<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Usually develops on previously damaged or diseased valves<\/li><li>In most cases, the organism is&nbsp;<strong>Streptococcus viridans<\/strong><ul><li>Other bacteria include S. aureus and bacteria that are often present within the oral cavity<\/li><li>Regardless of the species, the causative agent usually reaches the endocardium hematogenously (surgery)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Symptoms include&nbsp;<strong>fever&nbsp;<\/strong>and flu-like symptoms<ul><li>Untreated infective endocarditis is fatal<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Non-infective endocarditis<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sterile vegetations composed of deposits of thrombi, especially in those with hypercoagulability disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Small<\/li><li>No prior valvular damage<\/li><li><strong>Libmann-Sacks endocarditis<\/strong><ul><li>Presence of sterile vegetations in patients with SLE<\/li><li>Probably due to the hypercoagulable state and immune complex deposition, seen as fibrinoid necrosis<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Prosthetic valve related disorders<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The valve is a foreign body inserted by overriding (crushing) the existing valve, as it protrudes above the natural lining it disrupts the natural flow (turbulent flow)<\/li><li>Hemolysis due to the more robust mechanical opening and closing of the valve<\/li><li>Infections are common (highly invasive surgery)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infective endocarditis<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-infective endocarditis<\/h4><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prosthetic valve related disorders<\/h3><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Infective Non-infective Infective endocarditis Bacterial infection of the endocardium lining the valves (mostly) or chambers, leading to the formation of bacterial vegetations lined with thrombi and debris, causing the destruction of the tissue.
