title2\">Definition<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term is used for the description of abnormal contents within the pleura of the lung, usually accompanied by tissue damage.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">General mechanism<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recall that apart from a few mL of pleural fluid, the pleural space is supposed to be empty.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Pneumothorax<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gas within the pleural cavity<\/li><li>Usually due to an injury<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Pleural effusion<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fluids in the pleural space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Exudate<\/strong> (high protein content)<\/li><li><strong>Transudate<\/strong> (low protein content)<\/li><li><strong>Fibrinous&nbsp;<\/strong>(fibrin-rich)<\/li><li><strong>Hemothorax&nbsp;<\/strong>(bloody)<\/li><li><strong>Chylothorax&nbsp;<\/strong>(concentrated, dehydrated lymphatic fluid)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Exudate<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pleural exudate can be due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Microbial infection<\/strong> (suppurative pleuritis)<\/li><li><strong>Viral infection<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Cancer<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Pulmonary infarction<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Transudate<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Usually referred to as hydrothorax<\/li><li>Most often will be absorbed without any side-effect<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_7\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Primary Lesions<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_7\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bacterial infections<\/li><li>Neoplasms<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_8\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Neoplasms<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_8\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primary pleural neoplasms are relatively rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Malignant mesothelioma<\/strong><ul><li>Tumor of mesothelial cells taking one of the following forms:<ul><li><strong>Epithelial<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Sarcomatoid<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Biphasic<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Closely correlated to asbestos exposure<ul><li>Usually takes many years to develop<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Pleural fibrosis and plaque formation<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Solitary fibrous tumor<\/strong><ul><li>Mostly benign but have a potential for malignancy<\/li><li>Well-circumscribed, and often large<\/li><li>Grows slowly<\/li><li>Fibrous stroma with a low number of mitotic figures<\/li><li>Cells are CD34 and BCL-2
