The mandible is a U-shaped bone that is the only movable structure of the facial skeleton. In fact, it is considered as a separate bone from the rest of the facial skeleton, and it articulates with it through the temporomandibular joint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span>\n

Parts<\/h2>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

The mandible can be divided into two parts: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The ramus of the mandible (alveolar part, found laterally)<\/li>
  • The base of the mandible (anteriorly)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span>\n

    Landmarks <\/h2>\n<\/span>\n\n\n
    • Alveolar process for the teeth<\/li>
    • Mental foramina for the mental nerves and vessels (found above the second premolar teeth)<\/li>
    • Mental protuberance (osseous union where the two sides of the mandible come together) \u2013 the prominence of the chin <\/li>
    • The oblique line (bony point of attachment for muscles that depress the lower lip)<\/li>
    • Mental tubercle (pronounced bumps lateral to the mental protuberance) <\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span>
