wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The occipital bone is a singular, trapezoidal-shaped bone with a large, characteristic opening known as the <strong>foramen magnum<\/strong> (Latin for <em>great hole<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It has <strong>2 surfaces<\/strong> (outer, and inner), <strong>4 angles<\/strong> (two lateral, superior, and inferior) and <strong>2 borders<\/strong> (superior, and inferior).<\/li><li>It is formed by <strong>4 parts<\/strong> (two lateral, squamous, and basilar) described based id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The lateral parts contain two protuberances: the <strong>occipital condyles<\/strong>, which allow the articulation of the skull with the vertebral column through the atlanto-occipital joint. <\/li><li>Posteriorly to each condyle is the <strong>condylar fossa<\/strong>, a depression that contains a condylar canal.
