{"id":617,"date":"2020-02-14T07:13:48","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T07:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/?page_id=617"},"modified":"2020-02-14T07:13:48","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T07:13:48","slug":"muscle-tissue-tumors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/pathology\/soft-tissue-tumors\/muscle-tissue-tumors\/","title":{"rendered":"Muscle tissue tumors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muscle tissue tumors are classified according to the type of muscle tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Striated muscle<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most striated muscle tumors are of a <strong>malignant<\/strong> nature (<strong>rhabdomyosarcomas<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Rhabdomyosarcoma<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Malignant<\/strong><\/li><li>Aggressive<\/li><li>Most common soft-tissue sarcoma in children and young adults<\/li><li>Three subtypes exist (ordered by the degree of malignancy):<ul><li><strong>Embryonal <\/strong>(most cases)<ul><li>Most commonly found in the head and neck regions of children (ages 3-12)<ul><li>Mostly in regions absent of skeletal muscle<\/li><li>Consists of round (tadpole) and spindle (strap) cells<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Sarcoma botryoides\u00a0<\/strong>is a variant of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma that develops in walls of hollow viscera (vagina, bladder)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Alveolar<\/strong><ul><li>Most commonly found in the upper and lower extremities of young people (ages 10-25)<\/li><li>Resembles the alveolar tissue in the lungs, but has <strong>nothing to do with the lungs<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Pleomorphic<\/strong><ul><li>Most commonly found in skeletal muscles (thigh) of adults<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The botryoid variant of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma has the best prognosis, and the pleomorphic has the worst<\/li><li>Most cases are curable, using surgery and chemotherapy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Rhabdomyoma<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Extremely rare<\/li><li><strong>Benign<\/strong> tumor<\/li><li>Believed to arise from fetal striated muscle tissue (commonly\u00a0the heart)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Smooth muscle<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opposed to skeletal muscle tumors &#8212; most smooth muscle tumors are <strong>benign<\/strong> (leiomyomas).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Leiomyoma<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Benign<\/li><li>Can arise in any soft tissue site<ul><li>Most often in the uterus (myometrium)<ul><li>Can be classified according to its location (submucosal, intramural, subserosal)<\/li><li>Can cause infertility and menorrhagia (severe menstrual bleeding)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Other examples include pilar leiomyoma (arise from the erector pili muscles), gastrointestinal tract, etc.<\/li><li>Usually, arises from the muscular tissue<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Histologically, a capsulated, whorled lesion is observed<\/li><li>Loss of function mutation of the FH (fumarate hydratase) gene is commonly seen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Leiomyosarcoma<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Malignant<\/li><li>Occur mostly in adult women<\/li><li>Most common sites are the retroperitoneum, the limbs, and great vessel walls<ul><li>Usually, arises from the connective tissue around the smooth muscle<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Histologically, abundant mitotic figures and necrosis is observed<\/li><li>The lungs are a common site for metastasis<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Striated muscle<\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rhabdomyosarcoma<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rhabdomyoma<\/h4><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smooth muscle<\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leiomyoma<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leiomyosarcoma<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Muscle tissue tumors are classified according to the type of muscle tissue.
