{"id":611,"date":"2020-02-14T07:03:36","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T07:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/?page_id=611"},"modified":"2025-03-01T10:13:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T08:13:18","slug":"grading-and-staging-of-soft-tissue-tumors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/pathology\/soft-tissue-tumors\/grading-and-staging-of-soft-tissue-tumors\/","title":{"rendered":"Grading and staging of soft tissue tumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Grading<sup>1<\/sup><\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Recall that the grade of the tumor means the degree of the resemblance of the tumor to the nearby tissue.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grading is the&nbsp;most important prognostic factor and an indicator of metastatic risk in adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most commonly used grading systems are the French grading (FNCLCC) and the National Cancer Institute both of which are <strong>3-grade-based<\/strong> systems (I-III: differentiated, moderately undifferentiated, and undifferentiated), and in some cases, a 2-grade-based (I-II &#8212; differentiated, and undifferentiated) system is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grade is based on three parameters with a scoring system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tumor differentiation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mitoses per HPF (mitotic count)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The degree of tumor necrosis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Staging<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Recall that the stage of the tumor means the degree of the spread of the tumor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most commonly used staging systems used today are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>American Joint Committee<\/strong> (AJC) system which is based on the TNM system we previously discussed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enneking\u2019s<\/strong> staging system which uses the <strong>location<\/strong> and the <strong>grade<\/strong> of the tumor to establish its stage (I-III).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">References<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coindre J.
