{"id":607,"date":"2020-02-14T06:56:54","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T06:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/?page_id=607"},"modified":"2020-02-14T07:00:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T07:00:10","slug":"soft-tissue-tumors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/pathology\/soft-tissue-tumors\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft tissue tumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Definition<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Soft tissue<\/strong> is defined as the supportive tissue of various organs and the nonepithelial, extraskeletal structures except for the lymphohematopoietic tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Muscle tissue (skeletal, smooth, cardiac)<\/li><li>Fibrous tissue<\/li><li>Synovial tissue<\/li><li>Adipose tissue<\/li><li>Blood vessels<\/li><li>Neuroectodermal tissues<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Origin<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The direct origin of soft tissue tumors is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It is, however, presumed that the tumors arising from these tissues generally begin as undifferentiated mesenchymal cells (MSCs &#8212; mesenchymal stem cells)<\/em>. <em>The cells underwent multiple chromosomal alterations (in the majority of cases) or single-gene mutations (remainder of cases)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Characteristics<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally speaking, soft-tissue tumors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can arise everywhere in the body, but most commonly in the lower extremities and the abdomen<\/li><li>More common in males<\/li><li>Over 200 subtypes have been discovered.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Classifications<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with other tumors, we classify them by their nature &#8212; varying on their level of malignancy (with 4 WHO classifications depending on their behavior &#8212; discussed below). <strong>Malignant soft-tissue tumors are collectively known as sarcomas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general characteristics of <strong>malignant<\/strong>\u00a0soft-tissue\u00a0tumors include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Characteristic<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Benign<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Malignant<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Frequency<\/td><td>Common<\/td><td>Rare<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Location<\/td><td>Superficial<\/td><td>Deep<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Size<\/td><td>Small<\/td><td>Large<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Growth rate<\/td><td>Slow<\/td><td>Fast<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Angiogenesis<\/td><td>No<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Metastasis<\/td><td>No*<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*On extremely rare occasions, a benign tumor can metastasize (dislodging neoplastic cells during surgical interventions).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">WHO Classifications<sup>1<\/sup><\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Benign<\/strong><ul><li>Do not metastasize<\/li><li>Do not invade or destroy nearby tissues<\/li><li>For example &#8212; Lipomas<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Intermediate (locally invasive)<\/strong><ul><li>Do not metastasize<\/li><li>Invade and destroy nearby tissues<\/li><li>For example &#8212; Desmoid tumors<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Intermediate (rarely metastasizing)<\/strong><ul><li>2% of the tumors metastasize<\/li><li>Invade and destroy nearby tissues<\/li><li>For example &#8212;\u00a0Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Malignant<\/strong><ul><li>Tumors readily metastasize<\/li><li>Invade and destroy nearby tissues<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>D.
