{"id":4466,"date":"2021-02-11T00:04:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T23:04:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/skull\/orbit-and-extraocular-muscles\/extraocular-muscles\/"},"modified":"2021-02-11T00:13:28","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T23:13:28","slug":"extraocular-muscles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/skull-head-and-neck\/head\/muscles-head\/extraocular-muscles\/","title":{"rendered":"Extraocular muscles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extraocular muscles or extrinsic muscles of the eyeball are responsible for the movements of the eyeball and the superior eyelids.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Muscles<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven extraocular muscles are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The elevator upper eyelid (of the Latin <em>levator palpebrae superioris<\/em>)<\/li><li>The superior rectus<\/li><li>The inferior rectus<\/li><li>The medial rectus<\/li><li>The lateral rectus<\/li><li>The superior oblique&nbsp;<\/li><li>The inferior oblique<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This group of muscles works together to allow the eyeball and the eyelids to move, the movements are coordinated, so the muscles cannot perform in isolation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Levator palpebrae superioris<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superior of the extraocular muscles. As its name indicates, its function is to elevate the eyelid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Originates from the roof of the orbit<\/li><li>It locates anteriorly to the optic canal (inferior surface of the lesser wing of the sphenoid)<\/li><li>It is inserted at the anterior surface of the superior tarsus<\/li><li>Some of its fibers are attached to the skin of the upper eyelid<\/li><li>It is innervated by the oculomotor nerve (superior branch) &#8211; CN III<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic manifestation of the loss of function of the oculomotor nerve is complete palpebral ptosis (upper eyelid droop).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Superior rectus&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Originates from the superior segment of the common tendinous ring&nbsp;<\/li><li>Located above the optic canal<\/li><li>Elevates, adducts, and rotates internally the eyeball<\/li><li>Innervation: the superior branch of the oculomotor nerve<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Inferior rectus<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Originates from the inferior part of the common tendinous ring&nbsp;<\/li><li>Located below the optic canal.<\/li><li>Depresses, adducts, and externally rotates the eyeball&nbsp;<\/li><li>Innervation: the inferior branch of the oculomotor nerve<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Medial rectus<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Originates from the medial part of the common tendinous ring&nbsp;<\/li><li>Located anteromedially to&nbsp; the optic canal<\/li><li>Along with the lateral rectus, pass forward and attack to the anterior half of the eyeball<\/li><li>Adducts the eyeball<\/li><li>Innervation: inferior branch of the oculomotor nerve<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Lateral rectus<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Originates from the lateral segment of the common tendinous ring<\/li><li>Abducts the eyeball<\/li><li>Innervation: abducent nerve (CN VI)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_7\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Superior oblique<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_7\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Begin at the body of the sphenoid<\/li><li>It locates anteromedially to the optic canal&nbsp;<\/li><li>It relates medially with the origin of the elevator upper eyelid<\/li><li>It gets inserted into the fibrocartilaginous pulley (the trochlea)<\/li><li>Its tendon inserts into the external posterior quadrant of the eyeball<\/li><li>Directs the pupil down and out<\/li><li>Innervation: trochlear nerve (CN IV)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Inferior oblique<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_8\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inferior oblique is the only extraocular muscle that does not originate from the posterior part of the orbit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Takes origin at the medial part of the floor of the orbit<\/li><li>It connects with the maxilla (orbital surface)<\/li><li>It relates laterally to the nasolacrimal groove<\/li><li>Gets inserted into the external posterior quadrant (inferiorly to the lateral rectus)<\/li><li>Directs the pupil up and out&nbsp;<\/li><li>Innervation: inferior branch of the oculomotor nerve<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Muscles<\/h4><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Levator palpebrae superioris<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Superior rectus&nbsp;<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inferior rectus<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medial rectus<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lateral rectus<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Superior oblique<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inferior oblique<\/h3><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The extraocular muscles or extrinsic muscles of the eyeball are responsible for the movements of the eyeball and the superior eyelids.&nbsp;
