It contains the <strong>cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Bones<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The osseous components of this fossa are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The occipital bone<\/li><li>Parts of the sphenoid&nbsp;<\/li><li>Parts of the temporal bone.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The superior petrosal sinus and the back of the sella turcica establish the <strong>borderline between the middle and posterior cranial fossae<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>anterolateral walls<\/strong> of the posterior cranial fossae are formed by the petrous and mastoid parts of the temporal bones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Landmarks<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following structures can be found in the posterior cranial fossa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Foramen magnum<\/li><li>Cerebellar fossae&nbsp;<\/li><li>Cerebellum lobes<\/li><li>Internal jugular vein&nbsp;<\/li><li>The internal acoustic meatus for the facial (CN VII)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vestibulocochlear nerves (CN VIII)<\/li><li>The labyrinthine artery<\/li><li>The hypoglossal canal for the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The posterior cranial fossa is characterized by its marked and deep grooves, which are made up of the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. In the center of the posterior cranial fossa, it is <strong>located the foramen magnum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsequent to the foramen magnum, the internal occipital ridge divides the posterior cranial fossa into the <strong>cerebellar fossae<\/strong>, bilateral and concave impressions where the cerebellum rests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jugular foramen is also part of the posterior cranial fossa, located at the base of the petrous crest of the temporal bone.
