{"id":4122,"date":"2021-01-29T23:04:12","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T22:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/lower-limb\/foot\/foot-muscles\/joints-of-the-leg\/"},"modified":"2021-01-30T00:04:35","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T23:04:35","slug":"ankle-joint","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/lower-limb\/foot\/ankle-joint\/","title":{"rendered":"Ankle joint"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ankle joint<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ankle joint (also known as the talocrural articulation), is a <strong>hinge-type synovial joint<\/strong> formed by a <strong>malleolar mortise<\/strong> (tibia and fibula) that articulates with <strong>pulley-shaped trochlea<\/strong> (talus) located at the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, superior to the talus.<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Movements.<\/h1>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ankle joint allows the following movements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dorsiflexion.<\/li><li>Plantarflexion.<\/li><li>Abduction.<\/li><li>Adduction<\/li><li>Inversion.<\/li><li>Eversion.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Articular surfaces.<\/h1>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This joint is formed by multiple articular surfaces provided by the <strong>tibia<\/strong> and <strong>fibula<\/strong>, superiorly, and the <strong>talus<\/strong>, inferiorly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The talus forms the trochlea, which provides the rounded <strong>superior articular surface<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The malleolus of the fibula (lateral) provides the <strong>lateral articular surface of the mortise<\/strong>, articulating with the <strong>lateral surface of the talus<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The inferior surface of the tibia forms the <strong>inferior surface of the mortise<\/strong> and its malleolus (medial) provides the <strong>medial articular surface of the mortise<\/strong>, articulating with the <strong>medial surface of the talus<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Joint capsule.<\/h1>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being thin anteriorly and posteriorly, the joint capsule is reinforced by lateral and medial ligaments. Its fibrous fibers go from the articular surfaces of the tibia and arrive at the talus. The synovial fibers form a cavity that usually extends superiorly to the <strong>interosseous tibiofibular ligament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Ligaments.<\/h1>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reinforcing the joint in both sides, <strong>two major ligaments<\/strong> can be identified:<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">The lateral ligament of the ankle.<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It consists of <strong>three ligaments<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>anterior talofibular ligament<\/strong>, a weak fiber that begins in the lateral malleolus and finishes in the neck of the talus.<\/li><li>The <strong>posterior talofibular ligament<\/strong>, a strong fiber that begins in the malleolar fossa and finishes in the lateral tubercle of the talus.<\/li><li>The <strong>calcaneofibular ligament<\/strong>, a round fiber that begins in the lateral malleolus and finishes in the lateral surface of the calcaneus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">The medial ligament of the ankle.<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This strong ligament begins at the tip of the medial malleolus and finishes in the talus, calcaneus, and navicular bones. It consists of <strong>four parts<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>tibionavicular part.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>tibiocalcaneal part.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>anterior tibiotalar part.<\/strong><\/li><li>The <strong>posterior tibiotalar part.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_7\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">The interosseous tibiofibular ligament.<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_7\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it is not a ligament of the ankle joint per se, it provides stability to the articulation. It locates between the inner surfaces of the tibia and fibula.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_8\">\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Neurovasculature of the hip joint.<\/h1>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_8\">\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_9\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Vasculature.<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_9\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ankle joint is nourished by malleolar branches of the <strong>fibular<\/strong> and <strong>anterior <\/strong>and <strong>posterior tibial arteries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Innervation.<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_10\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As per its innervation, the <strong>common fibular nerve<\/strong> provides the <strong>tibial nerve<\/strong> and the <strong>deep fibular nerve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Movements.<\/h1><h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Articular surfaces.<\/h1><h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joint capsule.<\/h1><h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ligaments.<\/h1><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The lateral ligament of the ankle.<\/h2><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The medial ligament of the ankle.<\/h2><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The interosseous tibiofibular ligament.<\/h2><h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neurovasculature of the hip joint.<\/h1><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vasculature.<\/h2><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innervation.<\/h2><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ankle joint The ankle joint (also known as the talocrural articulation), is a hinge-type synovial joint formed by a malleolar mortise (tibia and fibula) that articulates with pulley-shaped trochlea (talus) located at the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, superior to the talus.
