The anterior muscles of the leg<\/strong> (Credit: OpenStax, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Extensor digitorum longus&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extensor digitorum longus is found laterally in the anterior compartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The extensor digitorum longus originates from the medial surface of the fibula and continues superiorly into the lateral condyle of the tibia.<\/li><li>It originates from:<ul><li>Lateral condyle of the tibia<\/li><li>Medial surface of the body of the fibula<\/li><li>Upper part of the interosseous membrane<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>It then descended to form a tendon into the dorsal (upper) aspect of the foot.<\/li><li>In the foot, the tendon splits into four tendons and then three bands each (12 bands in total) which insert onto the dorsal surface of the middle and distal phalanges of the lateral four digits.<\/li><li>The extensor digitorum longus function to extend the four digits it attaches to and dorsiflexes the ankle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Fibularis teritus<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fibularis tertius (also known as <strong>peroneus tertius<\/strong>) muscle is a part of the extensor digitorum longus, and is sometimes described as its fifth tendon as the two share a synovial sheath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It originates from the inferior part of the anterior surface of the fibula and the interosseus membrane.<\/li><li>It inserts onto the dorsal surface of the base of the 5th metatarsal.<\/li><li>The fibularis tertius is a weak dorsiflexor of the ankle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Extensor hallucis longus<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extensor hallucis longus muscle is a thin muscle found between and covered by the tibialis anterior and the extensor digitorum longus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It originates from the middle of the anterior surface of the fibula and the interosseus membrane.<\/li><li>It converts into a tendon in the lower half of the leg and descended into the foot.<\/li><li>In the foot, it continues anteromedially and inserts onto the dorsal surface of the distal phalanx of the great toe.<\/li><li>The extensor hallucis longus extends the great toe and dorsiflexes the ankle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Tibialis anterior<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tibialis anterior is found medial to the tibia, hence is the most medial and anterior muscle of the anterior compartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It originates the lateral condyle and the upper half of the lateral surface of the tibia, and from the interosseus membrane.<\/li><li>It descends downward and forms a tendon in the lower third of the leg, descending into the medial surface of the foot.<\/li><li>Then it inserts onto the medial and inferior surface of the medial cuneiform and the base of the first metatarsal.<\/li><li>The tibialis anterior assists the medial arch of the foot during walking, in the intertarsal joint it inverts the foot, and in the ankle joint it dorsiflexes it.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extensor digitorum longus&nbsp;<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fibularis teritus<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extensor hallucis longus<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tibialis anterior<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Extensor digitorum longus&nbsp; The extensor digitorum longus is found laterally in the anterior compartment.
