{"id":3976,"date":"2021-01-19T13:28:25","date_gmt":"2021-01-19T12:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/lower-limb\/thigh\/thigh-muscles\/medial-compartment\/"},"modified":"2021-01-22T20:47:33","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T19:47:33","slug":"medial-compartment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/lower-limb\/thigh\/thigh-muscles\/medial-compartment\/","title":{"rendered":"Medial compartment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"intro\">The medial compartment of the thigh is conveniently known as the <strong>adductor group<\/strong>, comprising of adducting and medially rotating muscles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Adductor longus<\/li><li>Adductor brevis<\/li><li>Adductor magnus<\/li><li>Gracilis\u00a0<\/li><li>Obturator externus\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Description<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All muscles in this compartment, except a part of the adductor magnus, act to <strong>adduct <\/strong>and <strong>medially rotate the thigh<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>and are innervated by the <strong>obturator nerve<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Adductor Longus&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the three adductor muscles, adductor longus is a flat, triangular, long muscle that is found most anteriorly of the adductor muscle group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It originates at the anterior aspect of the pubic body and inserts onto the linea aspera of the femur.<\/li><li>Along with the other adductor muscles, the adductor longus acts to adduct and medially rotate the thigh.<\/li><li>The adductor longus, as well as part of the adductor magnus, form the proximal portion of the posterior wall of the adductor canal.<\/li><li>The adductor longus also forms the floor and the medial wall of the femoral triangle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Adductor Brevis&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The adductor brevis lies deep to the adductor longus and pectineus muscles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is a short muscle that originates from the pubis body and the inferior pubic ramus and widens as it inserts onto the linea aspera&nbsp; of the femur.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It acts to medially rotate and adduct the thigh.<\/li><li>The obturator nerve courses through the adductor brevis, dividing it into anterior and posterior parts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Adductor Magnus\u00a0<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the largest of the adductor muscles and is found most posteriorly in the medial compartment of the thigh, forming the distal part of the posterior wall of the adductor canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The can be divided into an <strong>adductor<\/strong> and a <strong>hamstring part,<\/strong> with distinct innervation and actions.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The hamstring part of adductor magnus is found <strong>medially<\/strong> and it acts to extend the thigh and receives innervation by the <strong>sciatic nerve<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Conversely, the adductor part is found on its <strong>lateral<\/strong> side, and it flexes the thigh and is innervated by the <strong>obturator nerve<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The <strong>adductor hiatus <\/strong>is an opening between the adductor and hamstring parts of the adductor magnus muscle. The adductor hiatus allows the femoral artery and vein to travel from the adductor canal superiorly to the popliteal fossa of the knee inferiorly.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Gracilis<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gracilis is the most superficial and medial muscle of this group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is a long and thin muscle that acts as a weak thigh adductor, knee flexor, and lateral rotator.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It originates at the ischipubic ramus of the pelvis and inserts into the medial aspect of the medial tibia.<\/li><li>Distally, gracilis lies posterior to the tendon of sartorius and anterior to that of semitendinosus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Obturator Externus<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A deep, small muscle, the obturator externus extends from the external surface of the obturator membrane to join the medial compartment of thigh muscles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Its tendon passes the hip joint and femur neck and inserts onto the lateral aspect of the trochanteric fossa of the femur.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It acts to externally rotate the thigh.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adductor Longus&nbsp;<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adductor Brevis&nbsp;<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adductor Magnus\u00a0<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gracilis<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obturator Externus<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Description All muscles in this compartment, except a part of the adductor magnus, act to adduct and medially rotate the thigh, and are innervated by the obturator nerve.\u00a0 Adductor Longus&nbsp;
