Superficial muscles of the forearm<\/strong> (and the biceps brachii, brachioradialis and flexor digitorum longus muscles)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Flexor carpi ulnaris muscle<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>flexor carpi ulnaris muscle<\/strong> lies medially, having an origin from the <strong>olecranon and posterior border of the ulna<\/strong>, besides the humeral one.<\/li><li>It consists of two heads (humeral and ulnar) which have a strict relation with the <strong>ulnar nerve<\/strong> when it enters into this compartment.<\/li><li>Its tendon passes distally and inserts to the <strong>pisiform bone of the wrist<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It flexes and adducts the wrist joint.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Flexor carpi radialis muscle<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>flexor carpi radialis muscle<\/strong> lies laterally with its large and prominent tendon, which can be easily palpated medial to the <strong>radial artery<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It passes into the wrist and attaches to the <strong>bases of metacarpals II and III<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It flexes and abducts the wrist joint.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Palmaris longus muscle<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>palmaris longus muscle<\/strong> lies between the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor carpi radialis muscles. Its long tendon passes into the hand and attaches to the <strong>flexor retinaculum and palmar aponeurosis<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It is an accessory flexor of the wrist joint and opposes shearing forces when gripping.<\/li><li>It is absent in approximately 15% of the population.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Pronator teres muscle<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>pronator teres muscle<\/strong>, besides its epicondylar origin, also originates from the <strong>supracondylar ridge of the humerus and medial edge of the ulnar coronoid process<\/strong>.<\/li><li>After crossing the forearm, it attaches laterally on the <strong>midshaft of the radius<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It pronates the forearm.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Intermediate layer<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only muscle of this layer is the <strong>flexor digitorum superficialis muscle<\/strong>. It separates the superficial and deep layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The humero-ulnar head originates from the <strong>medial epicondyle of the humerus and adjacent medial edge of the ulnar coronoid process<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The radial head originates from the <strong>anterior oblique line of the radius<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Distally, its four tendons pass through the carpal tunnel into the four medial fingers. The ring and middle finger&#8217;s tendons are superficial, and the index and little finger&#8217;s tendons are profound.<\/li><li>Dividing into two parts near the base of the proximal phalanx of each finger, each tendon passes posteriorly around each side of the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle, attaching to the <strong>palmar surfaces of the middle phalanges<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It flexes the wrist, metacarpophalangeal, and proximal interphalangeal joints of each finger.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_7\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Deep layer<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_7\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deep layer consists of three muscles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Flexor digitorum profundus<\/li><li>Flexor pollicis longus<\/li><li>Pronator quadratus<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/anterior_deep.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Anterior compartment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/anterior_deep-600x378.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26494\" width=\"580\" height=\"365\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Figure 3. Deep muscles of the forearm<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_8\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Flexor digitorum profundus muscle<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_8\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>flexor digitorum profundus muscle<\/strong> originates from the <strong>ulnar anterior and medial surfaces and adjacent half of the anterior surface of the interosseous membrane<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Its four tendons pass through the carpal tunnel into the four medial fingers and insert into the <strong>anterior surface of the base of each distal phalanx<\/strong>.<\/li><li>It flexes the wrist, metacarpophalangeal, proximal and distal interphalangeal joints of each finger.<\/li><li>Some textbooks claim that it is innervated by the ulnar nerve, however, in most cases, it is innervated by the <strong>anterior interosseous nerve<\/strong>, a branch of the median nerve.
