Pulmonary circulation <\/strong>(Credit: OpenStax, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Description<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body&#8217;s circulatory system can be split into two: the <strong>systemic<\/strong> and the <strong>pulmonary circulation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>systemic circulation<\/strong> supplies oxygenated blood to all of the tissues of the body through arteries while draining the deoxygenated blood through the veins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Oxygenated blood is pumped from the left ventricle through the aorta<\/li><li>Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium through the superior and inferior vena cava<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>pulmonary circulation<\/strong> oxygenates the blood so it could be used once again; deoxygenated blood is supplied to the lungs, while oxygenated blood is drained out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While typically (in the systemic circulation), oxygenated blood flows through arteries and deoxygenated blood flows through veins, the situation in the pulmonary circulation is reversed; <strong>pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood, while the veins carry oxygenated blood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Deoxygenated blood is pumped from the right ventricle through the pulmonary trunk<\/li><li>Oxygenated blood enters the left atrium through the pulmonary veins<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each lung receives a single pulmonary artery that supplies&nbsp;it with deoxygenated&nbsp;blood, and two pulmonary veins that drain&nbsp;it from oxygenated&nbsp;blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The&nbsp;<strong>pulmonary trunk<\/strong>&nbsp;is the vessel from which&nbsp;<strong>deoxygenated blood<\/strong>&nbsp;is being ejected from the right ventricle through the semilunar valve<\/li><li>The pulmonary trunk divides into the right and the left pulmonary arteries at the level of the&nbsp;<strong>angle of Louis<\/strong><\/li><li>Each pulmonary artery divides into lobar arteries inside the root of the lung.<ul><li>The superior lobar artery arises just before the pulmonary artery enters the root<\/li><li>The lobar arteries divide further into the segmental arteries and it continues to branch out into smaller divisions until they form capillaries that surround the alveoli<\/li><li>After the blood undergoes oxygenation inside the alveoli, they reconstruct into veins that finally form large pulmonary veins<\/li><li>Each lung drains through a superior and an inferior pulmonary vein, carrying oxygenated blood from the corresponding lobes of each lung to the left atrium of the heart (in total, four pulmonary veins will reach the left atrium)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The pulmonary veins run separately from the arteries and bronchi in the lung, draining blood from nearby bronchopulmonary segments until they reach the hilum<\/li><li>Opposed to the veins, the arteries run in parallel to the bronchioles.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Description The body&#8217;s circulatory system can be split into two: the systemic and the pulmonary circulation.
