{"id":3356,"date":"2020-12-25T16:41:46","date_gmt":"2020-12-25T14:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/thorax\/respiratory-system\/neurovasculature\/"},"modified":"2020-12-26T00:48:07","modified_gmt":"2020-12-25T22:48:07","slug":"neurovasculature","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/thorax\/respiratory-system\/lungs\/neurovasculature\/","title":{"rendered":"Neurovasculature"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Blood supply<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lungs have a&nbsp;<strong>dual blood<\/strong>&nbsp;supply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Bronchial arteries<\/strong><ul><li>Arise\u00a0from the thoracic aorta and the posterior intercostal arteries to supply the tissues of the lung.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Pulmonary circulation<\/strong><ul><li>Described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/thorax\/respiratory-system\/lungs\/pulmonary-circulation\/\">pulmonary circulation<\/a> article<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Venous drainage<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bronchial veins<\/strong>&nbsp;drain the parenchyma into the pulmonary veins,&nbsp;superior vena cava, and&nbsp;azygos venous system.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Innervation<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sympathetic<\/strong>: Sympathetic trunk \u2014 mostly from the upper thoracic segments<\/li><li><strong>Parasympathetic<\/strong>: Vagus nerve (CN X)<\/li><li><strong>Sensory<\/strong>: Pleura \u2014 Intercostal and phrenic nerves<ul><li>Pain sensation may be felt on the skin dermatome of C3-5 (shoulder)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Lymphatic drainage<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the lungs, the lymphatic drainage is done through two lymphatic plexuses: a <strong>deep <\/strong>one, and a <strong>superficial <\/strong>one. Both of them communicate with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>deep lymphatic plexus<\/strong> drains the&nbsp;bronchi&nbsp;and the peribronchial connective tissue. It&nbsp;is located in the&nbsp;submucosal layer of the bronchi&nbsp;and in the peribronchial connective tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The deep lymphatic plexus drains into the&nbsp;<strong>pulmonary lymph nodes<\/strong>&nbsp;located at the lobar bronchi, then it will drain into the the&nbsp;<strong>bronchopulmonary <\/strong>(also known as the&nbsp;hilar) <strong>nodes<\/strong>&nbsp;in the region of the lung hilum<\/li><li>The bronchopulmonary nodes drain into the<strong> tracheobronchial nodes<\/strong> which are located at the bifurcation of the trachea<\/li><li>The tracheobronchial nodes drain into the <strong>paratracheal nodes<\/strong>, which are found along the trachea<\/li><li>The paratracheal nodes will drain into the <strong>bronchomediastinal trunks<\/strong> which ends up in the thoracic duct (left lung) and the lymphatic duct (right lung).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>superficial lymphatic plexus<\/strong>, also known as the <strong>subpleural lymphatic plexus<\/strong> drains the lung parenchyma (tissue) and the visceral pleura. It is found deep to the visceral pleura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It drains into the bronchopulmonary nodes, which then drain into the tracheobronchial nodes, and so forth as described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<strong> parietal pleura<\/strong> of the lungs is drained by the intercostal, internal mammary, posterior mediastinal, and diaphragmatic lymph nodes.<\/p>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blood supply<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Venous drainage<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innervation<\/h4><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lymphatic drainage<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blood supply The lungs have a&nbsp;dual blood&nbsp;supply: Bronchial arteries Arise\u00a0from the thoracic aorta and the posterior intercostal arteries to supply the tissues of the lung.
