Anatomy of the eye, eyelid, and lacrimal glands.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Eyelid<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eyelid protects the eye against abrasion, and to some degree against most types of insults.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Muscles<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>orbicularis oculi muscle<\/strong> is a skeletal muscle that controls the movement of the eyelid, while the\u00a0<strong>tarsal muscle<\/strong> is a smooth muscle attaching to a special flexible plate &#8212; the\u00a0<strong>tarsal plate<\/strong><\/li><li>The\u00a0<strong>levator palpebrae superior muscle\u00a0<\/strong>is another skeletal muscle that is often seen in histological section, it helps open the eyelid<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\"><\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Conjunctiva<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conjunctiva lines the inner eyelid and overlies the external sclera in a continuous matter, extending from the corneoscleral limbus as the <strong>bulbar<\/strong> (or <strong>ocular<\/strong>)<strong> conjunctiva<\/strong>&nbsp;to the inner lining of the eyelid as the <strong>palpebral conjunctiva <\/strong>(consisting of the <strong>orbital<\/strong>, <strong>tarsal<\/strong>, and <strong>marginal <\/strong>parts).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conjunctiva consists of <strong>stratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Fornix<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transition between the eyelid and the eye is called the <strong>fornix<\/strong>.
