{"id":3067,"date":"2020-12-13T21:28:09","date_gmt":"2020-12-13T19:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/histology\/neurohistology\/eyes-eyelids\/eye-chambers\/"},"modified":"2020-12-13T22:20:20","modified_gmt":"2020-12-13T20:20:20","slug":"eye-chambers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/histology\/nervous-system\/eyes-eyelids\/eye-chambers\/","title":{"rendered":"Eye Chambers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2000px-Schematic_diagram_of_the_human_eye_en.svg_1.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Eye Chambers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2000px-Schematic_diagram_of_the_human_eye_en.svg_1-590x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8918\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Schematic drawing of the eye&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8212; Rhcastilhos and Jmarchn &#8212; CC BY-SA 4.0<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Cavities within the eye<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three chambers within the eye:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Anterior chamber &#8212; Between the cornea and the iris, full of <strong>aqueous humor<\/strong><\/li><li>Posterior chamber &#8212; Between the iris and the lens, full of <strong>aqueous humor<\/strong><\/li><li>Vitreous chamber (cavity) &#8212; Between the lens and retina, the largest part, contains the <strong>vitreous body<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These chambers and their fluid-gel like contents, together with two other components of the eye cause <strong>refraction<\/strong> &#8212; a change of the path of light passing through them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cornea<\/li><li>Lens<\/li><li>Vitreous body<\/li><li>Aqueous humor<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Cornea<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The main refractive element<\/li><li>The most external part of the anterior eye &#8212; &#8220;the window of the eye&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Described in-depth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/course\/neurohistology\/lessons\/external-layer\/\">external layer<\/a>&nbsp;lesson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Lens<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A biconcave, avascular, transparent and elastic structure that helps focus light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Suspended from the ciliary process by special <strong>zonular fibers<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>zonules of Zin<\/strong><\/li><li>The lens can change its shape by the action of the ciliary muscle, and the pulling of the fibers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Vitreous body<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gel that fills the vitreous chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Besides refraction, it helps protect the retina by absorbing the shock applied during movement<\/li><li>The gel is made mostly of water and contains different types of proteins and GAGs<\/li><li>The fluid compartment is known as the <strong>vitreous humor<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>hyaloid canal<\/strong> is an embryological remnant of the hyaloid artery, in an adult, it runs between the vitreous body and the optic disc.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Aqueous humor<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fluid that is located within the anterior and posterior cavities. It is similar to plasma but contains much fewer proteins.<br>Besides refraction, it helps supply nutrients to the avascular tissues &#8212; the lens and cornea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aqueous humor is produced by the <strong>ciliary body<\/strong> at the posterior chamber, it passes between the lens and posterior iris reaching the anterior chamber, and then it passes to the angle between the cornea and iris, and ends at a special connection to the scleral veins called the <strong>canal of Schlemm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The blockage of this canal may lead to a clinical condition called<strong>&nbsp;glaucoma<\/strong>.
