In our histological samples, we’ll have to identify the orientation and visible anatomical features of the spinal cord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As discussed on the previous lessons, the organization of white and gray matter in the spinal cord are opposite to those in the brain — the white matter (“conduction lines”) are at the periphery, while the core is gray matter (cell bodies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the nerve rootlets and the gray matter are generally divided into two horns on each side — posterior <\/strong>(or dorsal) and anterior <\/strong>(or ventral), except for the thoracic segment which has a lateral horn as well — a total of 3 horns on each side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, the ventral horn is thicker and can be easily identified in histological cross-sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
