Within the cortex of the cerebellum, just as with the cerebrum, we can find several types of neuron cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- They have excitatory\/inhibitory functions (discussed in the next article)<\/li>
- In standard H&E slides, only Purkinje cells are clearly distinguishable<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Apart from neurons, the cerebellum is packed full with neuroglial cells — these are the same neuroglial cells of the CNS we’ve covered before, with additional types that can be identified in sections of the cerebellum, such as the Bergmann glial cells.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span>\n
Bergmann glial cells<\/h4>\n<\/span>\n\n\n
- Also known as radial epithelial cells<\/li>
- During the development of the cerebellum, they assist the migration of Purkinje and Granular cells<\/li>
- Function similarly to astrocytes<\/li>
- Respond to CNS damage (gliosis<\/strong> — formation of glial scar in sites of injury or stroke)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n
