Laryngeal cartilages<\/strong> (Credit: OpenStax, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Thyroid cartilage<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thyroid cartilage is a hyaline-type of cartilage, and the largest of the bunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Anteriorly, the thyroid cartilage has a butterfly-shape, with two laminae (the butterfly &#8220;wings&#8221;) fused in the middle, forming a superior V-shaped notch, the<strong> superior laryngeal notch<\/strong> (or insecure), and a less-pronounced <strong>inferior laryngeal notch<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The superior notch overlays the<strong> laryngeal prominence<\/strong>, a landmark known as <strong>Adam&#8217;s apple<\/strong>, which is easily palpable and pronounced in males.<\/li><li>Laterally, each lamina ends in an oblique line separating it from the two horns (or cornu) of that side, the <strong>superior <\/strong>and <strong>inferior horn<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"887\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/larynx-1024x887.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/larynx-1024x887.png 1024w, https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/larynx-300x260.png 300w, https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/larynx-768x666.png 768w, https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/larynx.png 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Figure 3. Laryngeal cartilages<\/strong> (Credit: Olek Remesz, CC BY 3.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two superior horns attach to the hyoid bone via the <strong>thyrohyoid membrane<\/strong> with its <strong>lateral thyrohyoid ligaments<\/strong> (the medial ligaments attach to the superior notch) while the inferior horns articulate with the cricoid cartilage via the cricothyroid joints (allowing rotation and gliding), and via the lateral cricothyroid ligaments (the median cricothyroid ligament attaches to the inferior margin) which are a part of the cricothyroid membrane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below the superior border of the thyroid cartilage and its superior horns, the thyrohyoid membrane attaches the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone. The superior laryngeal vessels and internal laryngeal nerves pierce this membrane medial to each superior horn.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Cricoid cartilage<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cricoid cartilage is a ring-shaped hyaline type of cartilage attaching to the trachea inferiorly via the cricotracheal ligament, and articulating with the thyroid and two arytenoid cartilages via synovial joints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has an anterior arch and a flatter posterior lamina.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Epiglottic cartilage<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped elastic cartilage covered by mucous membrane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It forms the superior part of the anterior wall, posteriorly to the root of the tongue and anterior to the laryngeal inlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a free superior end and a rooted inferior end \u2013 the stalk of the epiglottis, attached to the thyroid cartilage by the thyroepiglottic ligament, and to the hyoid via the hyoepiglottic ligament.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Arytenoid cartilages<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arytenoid cartilages are paired, three-sided pyramidal hyaline cartilages, that articulate with the superior surface of the cricoid cartilage lamina (posterior part) via the cricoarytenoid joints, allowing sliding of the arytenoids towards or away from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Each cartilage has 3 processes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Superiorly<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Apex, which bears the corniculate cartilages and attaches to the aryepiglottic fold.<\/li><li><strong>Anteriorly<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Vocal process, which provides posterior attachment to the vocal ligament.<\/li><li><strong>Laterally<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Muscular process, to which the posterior and lateral cricoarytenoid muscles attach.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/arytenoid.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3569\"\/><figcaption><strong>Figure 4.
