Nasal cavity and nasopharynx<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Divisions and contents<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nasal cavity can be divided into three parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Vestibular part<\/strong>: Between the&nbsp;<strong>nares<\/strong>&nbsp;(nostrils) and&nbsp;<strong>limen nasi<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Respiratory part:<\/strong> Lower 2\/3 \u2014 The major part of the nasal cavity, where the air goes through<\/li><li><strong>Olfactory part:<\/strong> Upper 1\/3, covered by olfactory epithelium<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The respiratory part contains curled shell-like shelves made of bone and mucous tissue called&nbsp;<strong>concha<\/strong>. There are three of them (superior, middle and inferior), and underneath each of them, we can find a&nbsp;<strong>nasal meatus<\/strong>&nbsp;(also superior, middle and inferior) \u2014 space where air can pass freely. The three meatuses join medially to form the&nbsp;<strong>common nasal meatus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_16537\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/concha_bones.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Nasal cavity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/concha_bones.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16537\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Figure 3. Nasal concha<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The superior and middle nasal concha are extensions of the ethmoid bone, while the inferior nasal concha is made out of its own bone, called the&nbsp;<strong>inferior concha bone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The respiratory part continues posteriorly, reaching the nasopharynx.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Neurovasculature<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"pure-table\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Blood supply<\/strong><\/td><td>Anterior and posterior ethmoidal arteries&nbsp;(branches of the ophthalmic artery)<br>Sphenopalatine artery&nbsp;(maxillary artery)<br>Greater palatine artery<br>Superior labial artery&nbsp;(a branch of the facial artery)<br>Lateral nasal artery&nbsp;(a branch of the facial artery)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Venous drainage<\/strong><\/td><td>A rich submucosal venous plexus is drained by three major veins:&nbsp;<br>Sphenopalatine vein&nbsp;(drains to the pterygoid venous plexus)<br>Anterior and posterior ethmoidal veins&nbsp;(ophthalmic or facial veins)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Innervation<\/strong><\/td><td>Olfactory nerve\u00a0(for the sense of smell)<br>Branches of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/head-and-neck\/neurovasculature\/innervation\/trigeminal-nerve-cn-v\/\">trigeminal nerve (CN V)<\/a>:\u00a0<br>1. Neurovasculature of the nasal cavity<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rich network of blood vessels allows for heat and moisture exchange of the air entering through the nose.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Clinical information<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Kiesselbach\u2019s point<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mentioned anastomose at an area called the\u00a0<strong>Kiesselbach\u2019s point<\/strong>.
