At rest, this space is collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Oral cavity proper<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oral cavity proper describes the space inside the alveolar arches, bound by the palate superiorly, and the floor of the mouth inferiorly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At rest (when the mandible is closed), the oral cavity proper is filled with the tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Palate<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The palate is the arched roof of the oral cavity. Covered by mucosal surface, it is split into two parts \u2014 the anterior, bony part called&nbsp;<strong>hard palate<\/strong>, and the posterior, fleshy part called&nbsp;<strong>soft palate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The hard palate is formed by the&nbsp;<strong>palatine process of the maxilla<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>horizontal plates of the palatine bone<\/strong><\/li><li>The soft palate is formed mainly by three&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/course\/anatomy-head-and-neck\/lessons\/muscles-of-the-soft-palate\/\">muscles<\/a>&nbsp;and is covered by aponeurosis (<strong>palatine aponeurosis<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_18225\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/palates.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Mouth and oral cavity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/palates-600x256.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18225\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Figure 2. It is formed mostly by the mylohyoid muscle, geniohyoid, and the mucosal surface beneath the tongue. The&nbsp;<strong>diaphragm of the mouth<\/strong>&nbsp;is formed by the mylohyoid muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_8\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Fauces<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_8\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The space between the oral cavity proper and the oropharynx \u2014 it is bound superiorly by the soft palate, inferiorly by the root of the tongue, and laterally by the&nbsp;<strong>palatoglossal<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>palatopharyngeal arches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two arches are formed by two muscles with that name.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_9\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Isthmus of the fauces<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_9\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The constricted space between the two arches, and in between the two arches we can find the&nbsp;<strong>palatine tonsils<\/strong>, part of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/course\/anatomy-head-and-neck\/lessons\/tonsil-ring\/\">Waldeyer\u2019s tonsillar ring<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clinical correlations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Recurrent infections of the palatine tonsils might lead to tissue damage and spreading to the parapharyngeal space, which is located right behind the tonsillar bed.<\/li><li>The&nbsp;<strong>supratonsillar&nbsp;fossa<\/strong>&nbsp;located above the tonsils is a frequent place where&nbsp;sharp foreign bodies (such as fish bones) might get stuck.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_10\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Neurovasculature<\/h3>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_10\">\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_11\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Lips, cheeks, and gingivae<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_11\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"pure-table\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Blood supply<\/strong><\/td><td>The lips and gingivae are supplied by the&nbsp;labial branches&nbsp;of the&nbsp;facial artery, while the cheeks are supplied by the&nbsp;buccal branch&nbsp;of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/head-and-neck\/neurovasculature\/blood-vessels-hn\/maxillary-artery\/\">maxillary artery<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Venous drainage<\/strong><\/td><td>Maxillary&nbsp;and&nbsp;facial veins<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Innervation<\/strong><\/td><td>Branches of the infraorbital nerve (upper part)<br>Branches of the mandibular nerve (lower part) <\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Lymphatic drainage<\/strong><\/td><td>Submandibular lymph nodes<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption><strong>Table 1.
