Uncoupling protein-1 (known as UPC-1) is a regulator of heat production found in the mitochondria, at the level of terminal oxidation.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown adipose tissue (BAT)<\/h3>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

The features of the brown fatty tissue involve the presence of UCP-1 (uncoupling protein-1) which regulates the heat production at the level of the terminal oxidation. Brown adipose tissue has more lipid droplets and mitochondria compared to the WAT<\/a> (white adipose tissue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UCP1 \u2013 Thermogenin<\/h3>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

UCP-1 allows adipose tissue to produce heat <\/strong>from excess amounts of fatty acids, released from the lipid droplets (Figure 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the system is working properly, it may contribute to the loss of up to 4kg of adipose tissue per year(!)<\/strong>; any genetic defect of the UCP-1 system may result in obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span>\n
