Transport of activated fatty acyl CoAs<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#b9fbe1\">The acyl group is transferred from acyl-CoA to carnitine via the help of\u00a0<strong>carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I)<\/strong>, which is located on the outer mitochondrial membrane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Acylcarnitine and free carnitine are then exchanged across the inner mitochondrial membrane by\u00a0<strong>carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>CACT<\/strong>) (<strong>Figure 1<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#bcf8e0\">In the next step of the <strong>carnitine shuttle<\/strong>, the fatty-acyl group is transferred from fatty acyl-carnitine to coenzyme-A, regenerating fatty acyl\u2013CoA and free carnitine. This reaction is catalyzed by carnitine acyltransferase II (<strong>CPTII<\/strong>), which is located on the inner mitochondrial membrane. The carnitine molecule formed is then shuttled back into the intermembrane space by CACT while the fatty acyl-CoA enters \u03b2-oxidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Malonyl CoA, which is the product of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and a key intermediate in fatty acid synthesis, is an inhibitor of CPT I.
