When we are thinking about lipids, we have to remember that water and oil can not be mixed (lipids are insoluble in water); this feature comes from the hydrophobic nature of the lipids. <\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We distinguish between two types of lipids based on what you will find in your kitchen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Solid (butter type)<\/li>
  2. Liquid (oil type)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Most lipids contain, or are produced from, fatty acids. Lipids have a lot of crucial biological functions, which will be discussed in the upcoming lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Forms of lipids in the human body<\/h2>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

    We can divide lipids based on their usage and function within our body:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Neutral lipids<\/strong> are hydrophobic molecules lacking charged groups. In several cells triacylglycerols (TAG) and steryl-esters give the major part of neutral lipids. These storage molecules accumulate when cells are provided with an excess of nutrients (mainly Acetyl-Coa – fatty acids).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fatty acids<\/strong> are made of Acetyl-Coa-s and represent the stored form of ATP. They are joined together in groups, forming TAG. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Phospholipids<\/strong> are lipids with hydrophilic “head” (phosphate group), and two hydrophobic “tails” (fatty acids), joined by glycerol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cholesterol <\/strong>is synthesized by all animal cells and is an essential structural component of membranes. It is a precursor of steroid hormones<\/strong>, cholic acid<\/strong> and vitamin D3<\/sub><\/strong>. Hepatic cells produce the greatest amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ketone bodies<\/strong> are Acetoacetate<\/strong>, Acetone<\/strong> and 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate<\/strong>.

    Triglycerides<\/strong> are ester-derivatives of glycerol and its associated three fatty acids. The only form of STORAGE!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<\/span>\n
