The\u00a0anterior mediastinum\u00a0is the smallest mediastinal compartment, found between the sternum and pericardium.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description<\/h4>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

Recall that the mediastinum is the central compartment of the thoracic cavity found between the two lungs and their pleura, and it is divided into superior and inferior compartments, with the inferior compartment being further sub-divided into anterior, middle, and posterior (inferior) compartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The anterior mediastinum is the frontal and inferior part of the mediastinum that is found between the sternum and the pericardium of the heart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the smallest mediastinal compartment that is mostly occupied by connective tissue and some vessels. There are no nerves passing through the anterior mediastinum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Connective tissue (areolar adipose connective tissue, and the sternopericardial ligament)<\/li>
  • Lymphatic vessels and several lymph nodes<\/li>
  • Branches of the internal thoracic vessels<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Another structure located within the anterior is the inferior part of the thymus \u2014 the inferior part of thymus can be found in this region in case of infants and children.<\/p>\n<\/span>
