Regulation of Glycogen phosphorylase<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#dffdf2\">The less active form,\u00a0<strong>glycogen phosphorylase b<\/strong>\u00a0is going to change in the presence of high levels of calcium (such as in muscle contraction) to the more active form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#e0f1fb\">The process also occurs when <strong>adrenaline<\/strong> is presented. The activated enzyme starts to degrade the glycogen and produces free glucose which is metabolised.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_5\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Glycogen phosphorylase in liver<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_5\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the liver, the same change will take place, but the role of glycogen degradation is to maintain the blood glucose level. This happens in the presence of glucagon and starvation signals. As a part of gluconeogenesis, it keeps appropriate levels of glucose in the bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_6\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Hormonal regulation<\/h2>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_6\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The synthesis or degradation of the glycogen is regulated by hormonal effects such as insulin, adrenaline, and glucagon.
