Gallbladder<\/strong>\u00a0(Credit: OpenStax\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\">CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Functions<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallbladder holds and concentrates bile (~50mL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bile is produced in the liver and is transported via the biliary tract system.<\/li><li>Bile aids the digestion of food by the emulsification of lipids and other enzymatic activity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During fasting, bile flows into the gallbladder through the cystic duct; however, during digestion bile flows from the gallbladder and the liver directly.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Parts<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallbladder can be split into three parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Neck<\/li><li>Body<\/li><li>Fundus<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallbladder attaches to the biliary system through the cystic duct (cyst means bladder).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_3\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Location<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_3\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallbladder is attached to the visceral surface of the liver, lying in a shallow fossa, covered by peritoneum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The body of the gallbladder comes into direct contact with the bare liver (remember, the fossa for the gallbladder is a\u00a0<strong>bare area\u00a0<\/strong>in the liver).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_4\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">The path of bile<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_4\">\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Produced in the liver<\/li><li><strong>Right<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0left hepatic ducts<\/strong>\u00a0drain each lobe of the liver<\/li><li>The\u00a0<strong>common hepatic duct<\/strong>\u00a0joins the\u00a0<strong>cystic duct<\/strong>, forming the\u00a0<strong>common bile duct<\/strong><\/li><li>The common bile duct joins the pancreatic duct to form the\u00a0<strong>hepatopancreatic duct<\/strong>; bile will join the pancreatic juice and empty into the descending duodenum.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_20262\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bile.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Gallbladder and biliary system\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/bile-600x504.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20262\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Figure 2.
