The internal iliac artery is the major artery of the pelvis and perineum, supplying the pelvic wall, viscera, gluteal region and genitalia. It branches off the common iliac artery around L5-S1, passing down anteromedially on the sacroiliac joint, forming\u00a0anterior\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0posterior\u00a0divisions<\/strong>.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anterior division<\/h4>\n<\/span>\n\n\n

The anterior division lies on the ureter and fallopian tubes. It gives off the following branches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Umbilical artery<\/strong> \u2014 Its proximal part gives the superior vesical artery which supplies the bladder, its distal part underwent fibrosis to form a ligament after birth<\/li>
  2. Obturator artery<\/strong> \u2014 Goes through obturator foramen, and supplies the muscles of the thigh.<\/li>
  3. Inferior vesical artery<\/strong> \u2014 Only in males, supplies the fundus of the bladder, the prostate, seminal vesicles, ductus deferens and the lower parts of the ureters<\/li>
  4. Vaginal artery<\/strong> \u2014 Only in females, supplies the vagina<\/li>
  5. Middle rectal artery<\/strong> \u2014 Supplies the lower part of the rectum and parts of the male accessory sex glands<\/li>
  6. Internal pudendal artery<\/strong> \u2014 Passes through the infrapiriform foramen and enters the pelvis through the lesser sciatic foramen, will continue through the pudendal canal<\/li>
  7. Inferior gluteal artery<\/strong> \u2014 Leaves through the infrapiriform hiatus, supplies gluteal muscles<\/li>
  8. Uterine artery<\/strong> \u2014 Supplies the uterus and cervix<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<\/span>\n

    Posterior division<\/h4>\n<\/span>\n\n\n
    1. Iliolumbar<\/strong> \u2014 Runs lateral to the promontory, supplies iliacus, quadratos lumborum and psoas major muscles<\/li>
    2. Lateral sacral<\/strong> \u2014 Runs inferiorly, branches off to enter the sacral foramina, supplying the sacral plexus<\/li>
    3. Superior gluteal artery<\/strong> \u2014 Leaves through the suprapiriform hiatus, supplies gluteal muscles<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
