If the allele from the mother is imprinted, then only the allele from the father is expressed.<\/li><li>Genomic imprinting is a fairly rare phenomenon in mammals and it is due to DNA methylation in promoter regions of genes.<\/li><li>The most significant disorders caused by this are the Prader-Willi and Angelman syndrome<em>(discussed in detail in the Cytogenetics: Uniparental Disomy lesson).<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Description If the allele inherited from the father is imprinted, it is thereby silenced, and the only allele from the mother is expressed.
