This means that an organism with &#8216;n&#8217; number of X chromosomes will have &#8216;n-1&#8217; Barr bodies.[\/intro]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This random inactivation(either maternal or paternal X chromosome) happens in somatic cells but once it happens, the chromosome will remain inactive throughout the lifetime of the cell and its offspring. It happens at the 32-cell embryonic stage.<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Mechanism of X inactivation<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The X chromosome has an <strong>X inactivation centre <\/strong>(Xic), that contains the XIST gene. The gene produces the XIST RNA that wraps tightly around the X chromosome and causes it to be transcriptionally inactive.<\/li><li>It is done by DNA methylation <em>(discussed in detail in the Epigenetics: DNA methylation lesson).<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Significance of X inactivation<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">X inactivation is the reason why X-linked diseases are more common in men than in women. X-linked diseases are diseases caused by genes that are present on the X-chromosome. In men, only one X chromosome is present so the disease will be expressed.
