{"id":1330,"date":"2020-08-05T21:10:57","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T21:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/head-and-neck\/neurovasculature\/innervation\/facial-nerve-cn-vii\/"},"modified":"2020-09-14T01:25:39","modified_gmt":"2020-09-13T23:25:39","slug":"facial-nerve-cn-vii","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meddists.com\/learn\/pre-clinical\/anatomy\/skull-head-and-neck\/neurovasculature\/innervation\/facial-nerve-cn-vii\/","title":{"rendered":"Facial nerve (CN VII)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"intro\">The facial nerve provides motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression and inner ear, sensory (taste) innervation, as well as parasympathetic innervation to the parasympathetic ganglia.<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_1\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Course<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_1\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Begins from two parts:<ol><li><strong>The nervus intermedius<\/strong>&nbsp;(consisting of special sensory and parasympathetic innervation)<\/li><li>The&nbsp;<strong>motor part<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>As it passes through the internal acoustic meatus, it will form the <strong>geniculate ganglion <\/strong>(<em>Latin:<\/em> small knee, owing to the sharp angle formed within the internal acoustic meatus).<\/li><li>The intracranial branches of CN VII will form the greater petrosal, chorda tympani nerves and the nerve to stapedius muscle, while the &#8220;visible&#8221; facial nerve (the motor part that is easily identifiable on the face) will emerge from the stylomastoid foramen.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title1\">Branches<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following branches are formed from the geniculate ganglion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Greater petrosal nerve<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Chorda tympani<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Nerve to stapedius<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Posterior auricular<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Nerve to posterior belly of the digastric muscle<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Facial nerve<\/strong>&nbsp;(motor part only)<ol><li>Temporal<\/li><li>Zygomatic<\/li><li>Buccal<\/li><li>Marginal mandibular<\/li><li>Cervical<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/facial_nerve_2_1.png\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Facial nerve (CN VII)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/meddists.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/facial_nerve_2_1-895x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4895\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Schematic drawing of the facial nerve<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The&nbsp;<strong>greater petrosal nerve<\/strong>&nbsp;together with the&nbsp;<strong>deep petrosal nerve<\/strong>&nbsp;(a sympathetic branch from the innervation around the internal carotid artery) will form the&nbsp;<strong>vidian nerve<\/strong>&nbsp;(nerve of the pterygoid canal) which will later form the pterygopalatine ganglion.<\/li><li>The&nbsp;chorda tympani&nbsp;supplies special viscerosensory (taste) fibers as well as a parasympathetic fiber which forms the submandibular ganglion (the chorda tympani nerve will provide parasympathetic innervation to the submandibular ganglion, as well as special sensory (taste) innervation to the anterior 2\/3 of the tongue.
