Used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to plasma proteins.<\/li><li><strong>Leukocyte reduced pRBC<\/strong> is used in patients with a history of <strong>nonhemolytic febrile transfusion reactions<\/strong>, and to reduce the risk of transmission of CMV.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Platelet concentrations<\/strong><ul><li>Given to patients with severe throbocytopenia (&lt;10G\/L), platelet dysfunction, and before major surgeries.<\/li><li>Contraindicated in ITP and TTP.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Fresh frozen plasma<\/strong><ul><li>Clotting factors without platelets, used for factor deficiencies, DIC, and warfarin reversal (when prothrombin complex concentrate is unavailable).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Cryoprecipitate<\/strong><ul><li>Concentrated from fresh frozen plasma (10% of the volume). <\/li><li>Contains mostly FVIII, FXIIII, and vWF.<\/li><li>Used in factor deficiencies, TTP, vWF disease, hemophilia, surgeries, HELLP syndrome.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>White blood cells<\/strong><ul><li>Used in neutropenia. Largely replaced by G-CSF and antibiotics.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Irradiated blood products<\/strong><ul><li>Used for the reduction of risk for graft-vs-host disease in immunocompromised patients.<\/li><li>Deals damage to lymphocytes.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/span><span class=\"block-heading\" id=\"header_2\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"title_collection title2\">Transfusion<\/h4>\n<\/span><span class=\"block-content\" id=\"contents_2\">\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check the patient&#8217;s details.<\/li><li>A sample of the patient&#8217;s blood is taken, and examined together with the donor blood using a blood typing kit.<\/li><li>The blood should be held at room temperature for 15-20 minutes prior to the transfusion.<\/li><li>18-gauge or larger needles are required for the prevention of RBC damage.<\/li><li>Each unit of blood should be completed in less than 4 hour.<\/li><li><strong>Massive blood transfusion<\/strong> is the transfusion of 10 or more blood components within 24 hours.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/span><div id=\"the_titles\" style=\"display:none;\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blood products<\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transfusion<\/h4><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blood products Whole blood Whole blood is rarely used in the Western world, as blood components are generally more efficient and are equally effective.
