Deep vein thrombosis

DVT is the occlusion of a vein due to clotting, typically in the lower limb.

  • DVT is the most common cause for PE.
  • The limb is edematous, warm, tender, and the patient may have fever.
  • Contributing factors include hypercoagulability disorders, prolonged sitting (airplanes), cancer, smoking, obesity, contraceptives, pregnancy, among others.
  • Differential diagnosis includes trauma, cellulitis, Baker's cyst.
