Deep vein thrombosis
DVT is the occlusion of a vein due to clotting, typically in the lower limb.
- DVT is the most common cause for PE.
- The limb is edematous, warm, tender, and the patient may have fever.
- Contributing factors include hypercoagulability disorders, prolonged sitting (airplanes), cancer, smoking, obesity, contraceptives, pregnancy, among others.
- Differential diagnosis includes trauma, cellulitis, Baker's cyst.
